Additional info/contents This concert work was commissioned by the Havre de Grace, Maryland, High School Band. It was written in memory of Jennifer Browning, a flutist in that band who died tragically in an automobile accident. The music strives to portray the joyful and uplifting spirit that Jennifer shared freely with everyone in her short life.
The Elegy theme is presented as a bitter-sweet melody played at first by a solitary clarinet. This theme continues to develop and build dramatically through the band, portraying the stark emotions involved in a time of grief. The music eventually softens again, closing quietly with a solo flute ascending to its top register, finally alone.
The Celebration begins with a fanfare, abruptly signaling a new mood of joy and excitement. Here is music that conveys a positive spirit, and a challenge to seize the day - living life to its fullest.

The term "Elegy and Celebration" in music describes a fascinating tension between two emotional poles: the elegy, which expresses sadness, reflection and melancholy, and the celebration, which embodies joy, liveliness and a festive mood. These two aspects can merge in different ways in a musical composition, creating a layered, profound experience for the listener.

The elegy is a musical genre that is often used to process loss, grief or sentimental memories. Elegiac pieces of music can be quiet, introspective and melancholic, inviting listeners to immerse themselves in an atmosphere of reflection and retrospection. There is often a depth of emotion in the elegy, conveyed through slow tempos, expressive melodies and harmonic nuances.

On the other side is celebration, which represents the expression of joy, jubilation and vibrant energy in music. Festive musical pieces can be lively, rhythmic and rousing, creating an atmosphere of excitement and enthusiasm. This type of music invites listeners to move, dance and celebrate life in all its facets.

"Elegy and Celebration" as a concept in music combines these two opposing emotions, creating a harmonious balance between sadness and joy, darkness and light, past and future. The combination of elegiac and celebratory elements in one composition creates a rich and nuanced musical experience that reflects the complexity of human emotional life.

An example of the use of "Elegy and Celebration" in music is the composition of a funeral march followed by a celebratory fanfare to honor the life and legacy of a deceased person. By contrasting these two emotional poles, composers and musicians can create a profound and moving musical narrative that takes listeners on an emotional journey.

Overall, "Elegy and Celebration" in music is a fascinating concept that captures the duality of human life and experience. By mixing sadness and joy, melancholy and excitement, composers can create a musical landscape that reflects the complexity and beauty of the human spirit.
