Programme notes *: "Divertimento for Band" by Ira Hearshen is an impressive work that explores and interprets the rich and diverse tradition of American music in five movements. Hearshen uses compositional and harmonic techniques that are deeply rooted in American music history and adds innovative twists that make the work unique. I. Ragtime (Joyously, but not too fast) The first movement, "Ragtime," is inspired by the energetic and syncopated music of ragtime, but with a modern twist. Hearshen incorporates the complex harmony of bebop, giving traditional ragtime a contemporary and jazzy touch. This movement is meant to be played cheerfully but not too fast, emphasizing the playful nature of ragtime while showcasing the sophisticated harmonic structures. II.
