Additional info/contents Composed in three movements, this work’s intention is to capture the spirit of an American community and celebrate the bringing community together. After reviewing a myriad of photographs of the community, its architecture, and its citizens, as well as several conversations with the director of the commissioning high school band, the composer was struck by a clear sense of the importance of family, of togetherness

Ryan Noslin's composition "Mid-American Sketches" is a musical tribute to the sense of origin and home that is a hallmark of the Midwest and Central America. The work consists of three movements, each capturing different aspects of this region and its inhabitants.

The first movement, "New Horizons," is a tribute to the new Middleville facility as well as the many people who established their lives and raised their families there. The music conveys a feeling of optimism and hope and is a reminder that the region has always been shaped by people who were willing to break new ground.

The second movement, "Home", describes a feeling of pride, awe, security and affection. Whether one is at home, traveling or abroad, there is a common connection to Central America that is a constant source of warmth. This music conveys the meaning of home and family and the deep connection that people feel with their region.

The third and final movement, "Tomorrows", embodies the spirit of the future and new possibilities. The music is dancey and lively, celebrating the community and sense of community that is so strong in the Midwest and Central America. This sentence reminds us that the region is shaped not only by its past, but also by its future and its capacity for renewal and growth.

Overall, "Mid-American Sketches" is a sensitive and inspiring musical depiction of the Midwest and Central America. By combining melodies, rhythms and harmonies, Ryan Noslin manages to capture and convey the unique atmosphere and deep emotional connections of this region.
