Programme notes *: additional text

After longer stays in Switzerland and France, Stravinsky moved to the USA in 1939. During the first years of his stay in America, he received a number of small commissioned compositions which he had accepted due to lack of money. Among these compositions is the "Circus Polka", whose subtitle reads: "Composed for a young elephant". Stravinsky had David Raksin arrange the piece for wind orchestra. The premiere took place on 9 April 1942 at the "Barnum and Bailey" Circus, Madison Square Garden, New York.
The program booklet at the time described the piece as follows: "A ballet for fifty elephants and fifty girls..." This composition is characterized above all by astonishing ideas and an extremely complex rhythm. Stravinsky even uses Schubert's military march in it, which for him was "an absolutely natural thing". The idea of an elephant ballet seems to have amused Igor Stravinsky to such an extent that a piece full of humour, joie de vivre and winking mischievousness has been created.
