Additional info/contents Latin American dance music is a blend of musical traditions. Musical elements of native Indians, Portuguese and Spanish settlers, and African slaves are all present in the lively Latin dances known as the rumba, the mambo, the calypso, the tango, and, of course, the cha cha. Because of technological advances such as the gramophone and radio, as well as the interest in the "big bands" and ballroom dancing, the first half of the 20th century saw the popularization of Latin dance music in North America and Europe. Interest in Latin styles continues today, influencing composers and performers of all types of music.
The most distinguishing characteristics of Latin music relate to rhythm. Players should identify repetitive rhythmic patterns in their parts. As is common in many Latin styles, the eight note subdivisions in "Cha Cha Del Sol" should be very deliberate. Throughout the composition, notes should be separated and cleanly articulated by the winds unless otherwise noted.
