Additional info/contents Already in the first movement Allegro the title of the work is elaborated musically: the angular theme in the brass and the turbulent turns of the wood provide an ominous as well as impetuous beginning. The next lyrical episode in the wood register, with its calm construction and flowing melody, forms a great contrast to the first theme, after which a development of this musical material leads to a heroic conclusion. The second part Adagio Molto is lyrically cantabile in mood in the first and last part. The middle movement Pesante is characterised by a resurrection, stubborn theme, which is given shape by the brass. Finally, the third movement Scherzo Finale is playfully rhythmic. Initially the percussion is given the leading role, but then the theme appears in other instrument groups as well. Short episodes with elements from previous movements provide a lively conclusion to this colourful composition.

"Conflicts and Confluences" in music and the composition of the same name by Henk Badings

The term "Conflicts and Confluences" describes musical concepts based on the idea of opposites and their confluences. In music, this refers to the confrontation and interplay of different musical elements such as melody, harmony, rhythm and dynamics. These opposites can include tension and resolution, disharmony and harmony or different stylistic elements that merge into a coherent musical work. Henk Badings, an influential Dutch composer, takes up these ideas in his composition "Conflicts and Confluences" for symphonic wind orchestra and develops them in three movements with the names:

1. First movement: "Cominciere" (Allegro) - The first movement "Cominciere" begins with an energetic Allegro that immediately draws the attention of the listeners. In this movement, Badings introduces various thematic elements that are both conflicting and confluent. Rhythmic complexity and striking melodic lines create a lively and dynamic atmosphere. The structure of the movement is based on the juxtaposition of contrasting musical motifs that interact with each other and eventually merge into a harmonious whole. The use of different timbres and dynamic shades contribute to the intensity and drama of this movement.

2. Second movement: "Adagio molto" - The second movement, "Adagio molto", offers a strong contrast to the preceding Allegro. Here, a slow and expressive melody prevails, leaving room for emotional depth and reflection. In this movement, Badings takes advantage of the opportunity to slowly build and release musical tensions. The slow, wide-ranging melodic lines are in stark contrast to the harmonic tensions that are gradually led to a resolution. The movement is characterized by a dense harmonic texture and rich orchestration that highlights the lyrical qualities of the wind instruments. The term "confluences" is exemplified here by the gradual confluence of the harmonic tensions into peaceful and harmonious passages.

3. Third Movement: "Scherzo Finale" - The final movement, "Scherzo Finale," combines the elements of conflict and confluence in a playful yet powerful way. Designed as a scherzo, this movement contains fast tempos, lively rhythms, and a certain lightness that is in stark contrast to the previous movements. Despite the jocular nature of the movement, the musical complexity remains. Badings relies here on surprising harmonic twists and rhythmic shifts that create constant tension and renewal. The movement ends in a powerful and triumphant finale that brings together and resolves the musical conflicts of the previous movements in a grandiose climax.

Henk Badings' "Conflicts and Confluences" for symphonic wind orchestra is an impressive work that explores and presents the concepts of conflict and confluence in a variety of ways. The first movement "Cominciere" (Allegro) is characterized by dynamic contrasts and lively rhythms, the second movement "Adagio molto" offers deep emotional reflections and harmonic tensions, while the third movement "Scherzo Finale" combines playful elements with musical complexity. Overall, Badings succeeds in combining these musical ideas into a coherent and captivating work that delights listeners with its profound and varied musical narrative.
