Additional info/contents The 'Cake Walk' is - just like the 'Quickstep'; the 'Schottisch'; the 'Rag' and the 'Quadrille'- a popular American dance from the second half of the last century. Both the rhythmic and the melodic structure of the Cake Walk display a clear relationship with ragtime and jazz and even a composer like Claude Debussy has availed himself of these influences in his music ('Le petit Nègre' and 'Golliwogg's Cake Walk'). The word 'Cake Walk' has yet another meaning in Holland; it is the name of a well-known centre of attraction at a fair: a system of planks and stairs - continuously moving up and down - devised to 'test' the fairgoer's sense of equilibrium. The same goes for this composition: the frequent changes in metrum - from even to odd - really call for a 'rhythmic equilibrium' of both conductor and orchestra!
The "Cake Walk Phantasy" was originally written for brass music and was scheduled as a 'compulsory piece' at the big VARA Brass Band Festival 1983 in Dronten (Netherlands). At the request of composer Peter Milray, Johan de Meij created an arrangement for harmony and brass orchestra. It is a cheerful, powerful work with, as already said, many rhythmic effects and a 'bluesy' trombone solo in the quiet middle section.

The Cake Walk is a fascinating phenomenon in music history that has its roots in the 19th century in the United States. Originally, the Cake Walk was a dance form that became popular in African American communities. It was a type of competition where couples in elegant costumes performed different steps to win a cake as a prize. The dance was characterized by a mixture of European quadrilles and African rhythms and became an important part of African-American culture.

Over time, the Cake Walk also found its way into the music world. Composers like Scott Joplin and W.C. Handy integrated elements of the cake walk into her works, especially in ragtime pieces. The character of the cake walk, characterized by its lilting rhythm and lively melody, gave the music a unique dynamic and energy.

A notable composition that brings the Cake Walk into the world of concert band music is Peter Milray's "Cake Walk Fantasy." This composition was later arranged for wind orchestra by Johan de Meij and thereby gained even greater fame and popularity.

The "Cake Walk Fantasy" is a lively and captivating piece that captures the distinctive characteristics of the cake walk. Through clever instrumentation and rhythmic variations, Milray succeeds in creating an atmosphere that inevitably captivates the listener. The music is characterized by a playful interplay between the different groups of instruments and thus creates a thrilling dynamic.

Johan de Meij's arrangement for wind orchestra gives the "Cake Walk Fantasy" an additional dimension. The tonal diversity and the impressive sonority of a wind orchestra make the piece even more lively and rousing. De Meij knows how to use the orchestra's various registers effectively and thus expand the sound palette of the piece.

Overall, Peter Milray's "Cake Walk Fantasy", arranged for wind orchestra by Johan de Meij, is a fascinating example of the combination of traditional dance and modern orchestral music. The piece combines the lively energy of the cake walk with the sonic brilliance of a wind orchestra and offers listeners a rousing musical experience.
