Programme notes *: additional text

Many composers were inspired by the Blue Ridge Mountains of North America. The melodic and rhythmic twists so characteristic of this area are a nutritious musical diet that brings the listener back into balance.

The three parts of this work are composed on the basis of symphonic structures, but a programmatic element is also included, namely the idea of Bacchus, the god of wine, women and song. Now and then Bacchus, the always noisy urbanite, turns his back to the competition of Olympus, the summit of the gods, and goes on a weekend getaway to the countryside. The development of this work should be regarded as a light and lively illustration of this line of thought.

Elements of jazz mingle with folk dances; Blues merge with the "Prairie style" and the Valse of Paris is drowned out by a cakewalk.

The composition "Bacchus on Blue Ridge" by Joseph Horovitz is a multi-faceted musical work that creates an interesting connection between symphonic structure and programmatic content. The three movements, "Moderato", "Blues - Vivo - Lento" and "Vivo", offer a varied and colourful musical journey that captures the idea of Bacchus, the god of wine, women and song.

The first movement, "Moderato", opens the work with a moderate tempo and a graceful, flowing character. This section could represent the image of a quiet, rural place where Bacchus escapes from everyday life. The gentle melodies and rich orchestration convey a peaceful atmosphere.

The second movement is divided into three sections and displays a multi-layered palette of musical influences. The "Blues" section brings in a jazzy and swinging mood, while "Vivo" with its lively energy is reminiscent of a lively folk dance. The "Lento" section adds a touch of introspection and gives the work emotional depth. This alternation of moods reflects the different aspects of Bacchus' character.

The third movement, "Vivo", presents lively and rousing music that embodies the idea of Bacchus' lively and sociable character. Elements of festivities, celebrations and dancing can be seen here. The rhythmic energy and varied orchestration create a dynamic atmosphere.

The programmatic idea of Bacchus retreating from busy city life to spend the weekend in the countryside is exemplified by the musical elements of the composition. The fusion of jazz and folk music elements, as well as the use of different styles such as blues and waltzes, reflect Bacchus' enjoyment of pleasure and variety.
