Additional info/contents 'Atmospheres' was composed on behalf of the Festliche Musiktage Uster and premiered in this Swiss city on October 1, 1989. The composer used as a basis for the composition the idea that the mood in a room only changes according to the mood of the people in the room. A discussion can create an uncomfortable and tense atmosphere and unbridled laughter can create a light, happy atmosphere in the same room. The room remains the same, but the atmosphere changes.
In this piece there is an 'Atmosphere' chord that does not change during the course of the piece, but is only transposed from time to time. What is built around this chord changes according to the prevailing feeling. The piece is played without interruption, but has three distinct parts and their titles are self-explanatory:
1. Mystery
2. Evil
3. Peace

Programme notes *: additional text

The first, very quiet mysterious, mostly quiet part is mainly characterized by long tones, dissonant chords that build up and changes of harmony with ostinato quarter pulse of the timpani. The tuning is interrupted by sections with large woodwind cantilenas (three-part solo in clarinets). The second exciting, downright frenetic part is composed in a fast eighth-note basic rhythm with sixteenth-note pairs rather motivic/fragmentary and with dissonant chords that build up. The individual motifs in the registers complete each other to form exciting lines that increase and condense again and again, always starting anew and culminating in a sonorous climax. The slow, relaxed, tonal third part describes a wide arc. After a calm introduction, a long flowing melody is started by clarinets and is completed by counter movements in the euphonium. The melody is taken over by cornets and then continued by horns and euphoniums. The instrumentation condenses and intensifies to calm and relax towards the end and fade away in a long major chord. Common instrumentation with triple trumpet and triple cornet. Manageable percussion parts.
