Programme notes *: Armageddon (also Armageddon, Armageddon or Har-Magedon, Greek Ἁρμαγεδών) in the Revelation of John designates the place of the eschatological decisive battle in the "war of the great day of God the Almighty". In a broader sense the term in theology describes the eschatological decisive battle, secularly it is used for very great, all-destroying catastrophes in general. The expectation of an eschatological battle at Armageddon has no noteworthy significance in the life and theology of the large, European influenced official churches. On the other hand, it is very important for eschatologically oriented Christian groups and artists. Because of the prevailing awareness in these special communities of the inner non-belonging to the transient world, the Revelation of John, understood as a book that describes the end of this world and the rise of a new one, takes on a special position. The motif of the last battle of Armageddon is also interpreted in this context. In secular (non-church) parlance the term, stripped of its theological content, is used synonymously with the end of the world or catastrophe.
