What is generally understood by down-to-earth folk music is not a second-rate music, it is rather the rural sister of the high art of sound.

Folk dance, which forms an inseparable unit with customs, folk song and folk costume, is perhaps nowhere cultivated with such characteristic naturalness as in the Alpine countries. The old peasant and folk dances have fortunately preserved their simple, but therefore no less diverse forms until today.

The "March", as a straight-beat "striking music", is a cheering music with a strong marking rhythm that has been used since ancient times for processions, festivals and celebrations of all kinds.

The "Ländler", or "Landler", took its name from the Upper Austrian "Landl", is a rural, cheerful round dance, i.e. a three-four time dance, and is generally regarded as the forerunner of the waltz.

The "Bayrische", or Bavarian Polka, must not be confused with the Bohemian Polka, also written in two-four time, which, in contrast to this almost crude stomp dance, is a much livelier folk dance.

The "Zwiefache" originates from southern Germany, is especially cultivated by the Lower Bavarian and Upper Palatinate country folk and is a hybrid of polka and ländler.
