Additional info/contents	William Byrd (1542 to 1623) is one of the most famous composers of Elizabethan England. Many of his pieces are included in the famous Fitzwilliam Virginal Book. This collection, which was very popular at the time, also served as an arrangement template for lutenists who transferred Byrd's pieces into lute tablature. The present dances are based on such versions. The editor in turn has transformed them from the old lute tablature into a form playable for guitar. The collection bears the title of a variation cycle on the song of the same name from the time of Byrd, which is included in the booklet. A delightful collection that introduces stylistically to musical England of the 16th/17th century. Basis of the present edition are (a) the Fitzwilliam Virginal Book (Dover Publication); and (b) William Byrd 'Music for the lute' (Oxford Press). All pieces have been transposed, the 'lute pieces' down a minor third, the virginal pieces in suitable guitar keys. In all cases the use of a capo is recommended. The 'lute pieces' have been arranged as accurately as possible; the virginal pieces have been thinned out a few times, these are not noted.
