Programme notes *: “O mio babbino caro”: Puccini’s Aria for Wind Orchestra “O mio babbino caro” is one of the most famous arias in the Italian operatic repertoire. Giacomo Puccini composed the piece for his one-act opera *Gianni Schicchi*, which premiered as the third part of the opera trilogy *Il trittico* at the Metropolitan Opera in New York on December 14, 1918. *Gianni Schicchi* is Puccini’s only comic opera, combining social satire with a moving love story. The plot is set in early 13th-century Florence. After the death of the wealthy Buoso Donati, his family discovers that the will does not meet their expectations. Gianni Schicchi is called upon to impersonate the deceased and dictate a new will, a situation he exploits for his own benefit. Schicchi’s daughter, Lauretta, loves Rinuccio, a member of the Donati family. Their union is complicated by family interests and financial conflicts. In “O mio babbino caro,” Lauretta pleads with her father to support her love for Rinuccio.
