Programme notes *: *Iubilaeum MMXXV* by Anthony Camilleri: The Concert March Between Celebration and Reflection With *Iubilaeum MMXXV*, Anthony Camilleri presents a composition for advanced wind orchestra, written for the Holy Year of Hope 2025. The Jubilee Year, proclaimed by Pope Francis, was characterized by hope, consolation, and communal renewal. Camilleri's work takes up these themes and translates them into a musical form that appears both rooted in tradition and expanded upon. In July 2025, the composition received third prize at the 4th Premier Music International Competition Pro. • The March as a Starting Point The designation as a concert march refers to the historical tradition of the genre. The regular impulse of movement, the orientation towards march-like rhythms, concise themes, and the sonic presence of the wind orchestra are all retained. This keeps the work immediately accessible and initially fulfills the expectations of a festive concert march. ''' Camilleri, however, does not use these characteristics as rigid guidelines. The march rhythm is integrated into a broader musical process and assumes various expressive functions. It not only represents movement and public celebration but can also convey concentration, tension, and inner reflection. In this way, the composition oscillates between the joy of communal music-making and a contemplative reflection on the meaning of hope. • Between festive celebration and contemplative reflection This tension is particularly evident in the harmonic structure. Harmonic nuances expand familiar tonal relationships and, at times, challenge their stability. Shifting tonal centers create the impression of a musical search for orientation. Confirmation and uncertainty thus enter into a fluctuating relationship. Hope does not appear as unbroken optimism but as a perspective that must prove itself precisely in the face of despair, loss, and uncertainty. The treatment of the sonic layers also contributes to this expression. Textural densities unite melodic lines, countermelodies, rhythmic movements, and orchestral soundscapes. These contrast with more transparent, understated passages in which individual instrumental colors and motifs emerge more clearly. The alternation between sonic richness and reduction creates contrasts without isolating the individual sections from one another. • Symphonic Development within the March Form The compositional expansion of the march genre lies primarily in the symphonic development of the material. Themes and motifs are not merely repeated, but rather altered, condensed, and transformed into new harmonic or instrumental contexts. A theme that initially appears festive can later take on a more contemplative meaning. Rhythmic patterns temporarily lose their directness before regaining their conciseness in a crescendo. The concluding recapitulation therefore has a function that extends beyond mere repetition. It does not simply reproduce the previously presented material unchanged, but rather expands and integrates it. Earlier musical states are brought together within a broader perspective. The return to the festive elements thus appears not as a simple repetition, but as the result of a developmental process. *Iubilaeum MMXXV* thus preserves the formal and rhythmic identity of the concert march, yet transcends its functional limitations. The march remains recognizable as the musical foundation, but is embedded within a large-scale, symphonically conceived architecture. Festive celebration, communal experience, and contemplative reflection exist in a constructive tension. • Anthony Camilleri thereby places the genre in a more reflective and compositionally demanding context. *Iubilaeum MMXXV* is not only a musical tribute to the Holy Year, but also an exploration of the conditions for hope.
