Composer Moitzi, Florian
Difficulty level 4
Duration 10:05
Additional info/contents The symphonic poem “The White River” by Florian Moitzi depicts the picturesque Alm River found in his homeland. The river originates in the picturesque Almsee north of the Dead Mountains and flows through the idyllic Almtal before finally merging into the Traun.
The composition begins with an imposing introduction capturing the view of the imposing Dead Mountains. Rapid chord changes and powerful brass instruments characterize this section.
In the next part, which describes the legendary Almsee at the edge of the Dead Mountains, the water motif emerges. It culminates twice in a mythically sounding cluster chord. Then melody fragments of the Almseelied “So frisch is mei Bluat” (“So fresh is my blood”) are heard. They are echoed, reminiscent of the traditional annual echo blowing at the Almsee.

The mood quickly shifts to a cheerful, brisk tempo. The Alm River springs from the lake. The swift flow of crystal-clear water is symbolized by lively, syncopated chord progressions. Above it, a romantic melody rises, beginning with the notes of the Almseelied. After a modulation, the water motif mentioned earlier appears several times in the counter melody.
Following that, fanfare-like sounds evoke the medieval castles that once towered along the Alm. The rural lifestyle in the Almtal is captured in a lively waltz section, which also includes a “Juchitzer” (melodious shout) and the typical “Paschen” (rhythmic clapping) of the Salzkammergut region.

After a transition, suddenly thunder and rain set in. Chords composed of tones from the Dorian scale sound threatening and express uncertainty. A recurring motif consisting of the first three tones of a minor scale symbolizes the gradual rise of the water. With the introduction of the rhythmic accompaniment, it becomes clear the energies behind the masses of water. The increase in volume due to the addition of more instruments and the rapid changes in key convey danger. Then a fugue begins in several instrumental groups. After a dramatic quintfall sequence, it reappears in a stretto, meaning the themes enter more rapidly. The “pedal tone” (tonic) in the low register and loud beats in the percussion section intensify the drama. After a brief pause in the music, a cluster chord heralds the climax of this section. The three-tone motif in a minor key develops into a powerful melody, also reminiscent of the Almseelied. The rocky rhythm underscores both the force of the water masses and the efforts of the people in the fight against the flood. The section ends with a unison and strong dissonant sounds.
Finally, the water recedes. The shift from minor to major illustrates that the water gradually clears. The water motif is heard several times again, and a calm, passionate melody expresses the beauty of the Alm River. In a pompous conclusion, the Alm merges into the Traun.
