Additional info/contents The 64-gun Spanish war galleon, built in Cuba between 1770 and 1771 for an English shipowner in the service of the Spanish king, left Peru in 1784 for Cadiz with a huge cargo of copper, gold, silver and other valuables on board. Also on board were more than 400 people, including passengers, crew members and Inca prisoners taken after a revolt. The Atlantic crossing went smoothly, passing through Portugal to take advantage of the favorable winds. The shipwreck off Peniche was the result of human error, apparently due to French maps that contained dramatic errors regarding the position of the Berlengas and neighboring islets. On February 2, 1786, in calm seas and a clear night, they struck the Papoa rock formation and the hull immediately broke in two. The bottom sank quickly, while the deck remained above water for some time. 128 people lost their lives, including many Indians who were trapped in the basement.

What the composer wants to convey and what one feels when listening is first the sound of power, hope, the glory of conquest, the splendor of wealth. This is followed by the perception of the maritime environment, the harmony with the softness of the sea, the gliding of the ship's hull in the foam of the sea on sunny, blue days. But alongside this calm, one soon hears a rhythmic chain that conveys the hustle and bustle, the busy crew, the hard work of a sailor, the despair of an exotic people trapped in a dark, damp basement. A marked rhythm that recalls the "Salero" of Andalusia, with its Arab influences and its people, which appeases the resignation of the others who are forced to submit. Then we clearly hear a crescendo that lets us sense the agony of the collision that precedes the shipwreck. The breaking of the hull, the water that floods everything, the despair, the clash of bodies on the rocks, the impending tragedy. Before the "grand finale" in which the return of musical softness reminds us that the story is over. The supremacy of nature over human greed. The waves, however gentle, wash the debris, the life and the treasures of the New World to the bottom of the sea.
