At the beginning, the atmosphere of the grotto in which the water sprite lives is brought to life by imitation drops of water. The water sprite is pursued and captured by people. In his distress, he begs for freedom and makes the people an offer: gold mines for a year, silver mines for ten years, or iron mines forever. The people's clear answer is: iron forever. The finale of the composition underlines this decision with impressive anvil blows, and the Erzberg rises triumphantly to the center of the action.
