Composer Ziegelbäck, Andreas
Difficulty level 1
Duration 3:00
Additional info/contents "Jet Stream" is a composition for a small wind orchestra. The jet stream, a strong wind in the lowest part of the earth's atmosphere, is the focus of this musical performance. This strong wind occurs particularly frequently in the border areas of different temperature regions on earth, where it separates warm and cold air masses. The winds flowing horizontally around the globe can reach speeds of up to 540 kilometers per hour, about fifteen kilometers above our heads. These rapid wind chimes play a significant role in our weather and climate on earth.
The composition uses a so-called howling tube on the percussion to symbolically represent the wind. "Jet Stream" attempts to capture the dynamics and energy of these high-altitude winds in a musically and technically simple way. At the same time, its dramatic tone language serves as a call for a more responsible approach to our environment. Thanks to the small ensemble, this piece is particularly suitable for wind instrument classes.

The composition "Jet Stream" by Andreas Ziegelbäck is an outstanding work for wind orchestras of the lower performance level and wind classes, which was awarded as part of the 2023/2024 composition competition "NEW LITERATURE FOR YOUTH WIND ORCHESTRA" of the Austrian Wind Music Youth. This award underlines the importance of the piece both for the musical education of young musicians and for the repertoire of wind orchestras at this level. The creation, musical characteristics and pedagogical relevance of the work are examined in more detail below.

"Jet Stream" was created as part of a composition competition that aims to promote new, high-quality literature for youth wind orchestras. The competition is specifically aimed at works that are tailored to the needs and abilities of wind classes and orchestras of the lower performance levels. This initiative is intended not only to introduce young musicians to more demanding works, but also to expand the repertoire for these orchestras.

Andreas Ziegelbäck, an Austrian composer and music teacher, has created a work with “Jet Stream” that fits perfectly into this context. His composition musically takes up the theme of the jet stream, a powerful air current in the atmosphere, and translates this natural phenomenon into a dynamic, energetic sound language that offers both players and listeners an intense experience.

The composition is characterized by a clear, well-structured form that is specifically tailored to the needs of young musicians. It combines rhythmic conciseness with catchy melodies and at the same time offers space for musical development and sound experiments. The melodies in “Jet Stream” are deliberately kept simple and catchy so that they are easy to play for wind instrument classes and orchestras of lower performance levels. At the same time, they offer enough musical substance to remain in the memory of both players and audiences. The melodic lines frequently switch between instrument groups, giving the young musicians the opportunity to shine both as part of the ensemble and in solo passages.

A central goal of the work is to challenge young musicians musically and technically without overwhelming them. "Jet Stream" is designed to promote the playing skills of beginners while at the same time putting the fun of making music at the forefront. It covers essential musical elements such as rhythm, melody, dynamics and articulation, which are essential for training wind instrument classes. The work offers numerous opportunities to practice playing together within the orchestra. The clear rhythmic structures and the clear melodies require precise coordination and concentration from the players. At the same time, the piece offers space to improve communication within the group - an essential skill for making music in an ensemble.

Despite its accessibility for young musicians, "Jet Stream" contains technical challenges that motivate the players to further develop their instrumental skills. In particular, the clean playing of articulations, sustaining long notes and playing dynamic contrasts are encouraged by the composition. These elements are central to later playing in more demanding orchestras.

Although the work is relatively simple, it still offers room for musical expression and interpretation. The young musicians are encouraged to go beyond mere technical playing and to identify with the musical message of the piece. This teaches them to combine their instrumental technique with musical expression - a skill that is essential for their further musical growth.

The award of "Jet Stream" in the Austrian Wind Music Youth Composition Competition shows the high quality and relevance of the work. The competition promotes compositions that are characterized by musical innovation and educational value, and "Jet Stream" meets both criteria to a high degree. The jury praised the successful combination of technical accessibility and musical depth, which allows the work to be used both as a learning piece and as an impressive performance piece.

"Jet Stream" by Andreas Ziegelbäck is much more than just a technical exercise for young musicians. It is a dynamic and inspiring work that supports the musical development of wind classes and orchestras at lower levels. Through its catchy melodies, its tonal variety and its pedagogical structure, it helps to promote young musicians both technically and musically.
