Composer Ericsen, Lars
Difficulty level 2
Duration 3:30
Additional info/contents Hardly any other country in the world is identified as closely with a particular musical instrument as Scotland is with the bagpipe. Bagpipes, as these instruments are also called, have existed and still exist in various designs and tunings in almost all European countries; but the "Great Highland Bagpipe" from the Scottish Highlands is certainly the instrument that comes to mind when one speaks of bagpipes. And if the player or players are wearing kilts and their unmistakable Scottish costume, then the expected image is complete.

Lars Ericsen came up with the idea for this piece when he was taking part in an international military music show. A rehearsal with all the musicians involved was scheduled for the morning. As Ericsen stood outside the event hall, a bagpiper marched out of a side entrance playing, gradually followed by all of his colleagues from the Scottish bagpipe corps, who apparently wanted to serenade a birthday child who was also standing outside. The volume increased enormously as the players approached, and when Ericsen turned his gaze to follow the procession further, he saw that the bright morning sun had just risen over a neighboring building, bathing the scene in dazzling light.

"Scottish Sunrise" begins quietly and gradually increases to fortissimo, which corresponds to the acoustic procession in front of the hall, but also symbolically to the rising of the sun. The melody is in the style of a traditional Scottish folk tune. The deep sustained tone characteristic of the bagpipes (the so-called "Bordun") underpins the melody at the beginning. Even without a bagpipe, the composition thus has a typically "Scottish" timbre. However, the edition also includes a part for a real bagpipe - for all those who want and can make their performance even more authentic.

By the way: In addition to bagpipes and kilts, the Scottish Highlands are also famous worldwide for their whisky ("Scotch"). There is a whiskey cocktail called “Scotch Sunrise.” This ambiguity was, incidentally, entirely part of the author’s humorous intention.
