Programme notes *: The mining accident in the Courrières coal mine, which occurred on March 10, 1906, is considered the largest mining accident in Europe and the second largest in the world. This tragic disaster resulted in a significant loss of life and had a far-reaching impact on the mining industry and society in northern France. The accident occurred in one of the largest coal mines in the region, the Courrières mine near Lens. As a result of underground explosions, tunnels collapsed, gas leaked and coal dust ignited, resulting in a devastating series of explosions. The exact death toll remains unclear, but it is estimated that over 1,100 miners lost their lives while many more were injured.
