Additional info/contents The myth of El Dorado (“the Golden One”) is about a powerful ruler who, before bathing in a sacred lake, covered himself in gold dust and threw precious objects into the lake as offerings to the gods. The myth soon spread to the Spanish conquerors and was the reason for numerous expeditions, but they did not find nearly as much gold as they had hoped. Eldorado is a mysterious and dynamic work that depicts the myth of the “Golden Man” and the resulting European expeditions. The music is very varied due to ethnic overtones. This piece was commissioned by the French cultural association Lille3000 for the theme “Eldorado” in 2019.

The term "El Dorado" is deeply rooted in cultural history and has taken on many facets over the centuries. Originally from the Spanish language and translated as “The Golden One,” “El Dorado” refers to the idea of a mythical place where gold can be found in abundance. This legend has not only fascinated the explorers and conquerors of yesteryear, but has also inspired artists and musicians to create their own creative interpretations.

In music, "El Dorado" is often found as a metaphorical motif, alluding not only to physical wealth, but also to a utopian, idealized world. A notable example is the eponymous suite "El Dorado" by the French composer Emmanuel Chabrier. In this late 19th-century symphonic poem, Chabrier creates a musical landscape that captures the idea of "El Dorado" as a mythical, distant place. The orchestral splendor and tonal diversity reflect the fascination and aspiration for a place that has become for many a symbol of unattainable dreams and desires.

Furthermore, the term “El Dorado” has also played a formative role in Latin American music. In various songs and rhythms, "El Dorado" is interpreted as a symbol of the search for freedom, prosperity and cultural identity. The tonal palette ranges from traditional folk sounds to modern musical fusions that reflect the diversity of the Latin American musical landscape.

“El Dorado” has also served as an inspiration in the rock genre. The search for a mystical place, be it metaphorical or literal, is reflected in song lyrics and musical compositions. Artists use the image of "El Dorado" as a metaphor for hope for a better place or for the pursuit of inner wealth.

In summary, the connection between "El Dorado" and music shows how a cultural myth has influenced the creativity of artists around the world. Whether as a symphonic poem, Latin American rhythm or rock song, the musical interpretations of "El Dorado" reflect the timeless fascination that this mythical place exerts on the human imagination.
