Additional info/contents Bleak Forest is a wind band piece for smaller ensembles and above all offers the musicians space to improve their sound and effects playing. The technical requirements are therefore deliberately not too high. With this piece, the composer won the "VLAMO International Composition Contest 2022". Thematically, the work is influenced by the composer's childhood memories. In his homeland, there was a dark, legendary forest that seemed magical to the children from the small village. For no specific reason, every excursion into this forest turned into an exciting, sometimes terrifying adventure. There were tales of threatening animals, which can be heard at the beginning of the play, as well as of magical beings. The magic of the forest is set to music in the Andante from bar 70. The snapping of fingers stands for isolated raindrops. From bar 99 onwards, the march home is described, with occasional queasy feelings arising as the children frighten each other with their imaginative tales. In the end, however, there is the safe arrival at home, because magical beings only exist in stories after all... don't they?

The composition "Bleak Forest" by Andreas Ziegelbäck is a fascinating musical work that captures the composer's childhood memories in a dark and legendary forest. This composition offers a rich tapestry of sound that expresses the mixture of childlike curiosity, fear and magic in an impressive musical journey through the forest.

The piece begins with a haunting depiction of menacing animals that highlight the sombre atmosphere of the forest. The musical depiction of these animals conveys a sense of eeriness and sets the stage for the adventure that awaits the children. The use of different instrumental techniques and dissonances could help to enhance the spooky mood.

The Andante, which sets the magic of the forest to music, brings a soothing change in mood. The gentle sounds and melodic phrases convey a sense of enchantment and mystery. Here the music captures a child's fascination with the magic of the forest, while memories of fantastic stories and wild imaginings come alive. It begins to rain, the snapping of fingers representing isolated raindrops adds a subtle and atmospheric layer that immerses the listener deeper into the scenery. This element adds a spatial dimension to the piece and allows listeners to feel their way into the forest.

The march home is accompanied by a mixture of excited and queasy sounds that reflect the ambivalence of the children's feelings. As they make their way home, they tell each other imaginative and creepy stories that at times reinforce their own unease. These moments could be represented by alternating between happy and eerie melodies that capture the children's emotions.

Finally, the composition leads to a soothing and concluding section that symbolises the safe arrival home. This part of the piece emphasises the separation between the fantastic stories of the forest and the reality of the village at home. The music comes to a harmonious conclusion here, conveying a sense of security.

Overall, "Bleak Forest" by Andreas Ziegelbäck paints an impressive picture of the composer's childhood memories in a mysterious forest. The varied use of musical textures, sounds and moods allows the listener to immerse themselves in the world of memories and experience the emotional highs and lows of this experience. The composition is a tribute to the power of imagination and the memories rooted in our childhood.
