Additional info/contents The Little Tokyo Suite is a work in three movements for wind ensemble. The flexible 10-part orchestration makes it suitable for any wind or fanfare orchestra. The suite describes the so-called "Japantowns", which were founded by Japanese emigrants and their descendants. Many of them are called "Little Tokyo" in reference to Japan's capital. The three movements each focus on a region with such a Japanese community. This suite is dedicated to the Wind Orchestra of the Conservatory of the 12th Arrondissement of Paris and its conductor Jérôme Laran, a lover of Japanese culture, and to Mochizuki Junior High School, Saku City (Nagano, Japan) and its conductor Sachiko Hanazato. In 2022, both premiered the work 10,000 kilometres apart.

Thierry Deleruyelle is a distinguished French composer and arranger known for his significant contributions to wind band literature. He has written numerous works for various instrumentations and is respected for his meticulous compositional work and his ability to create evocative sonic images. "Little Tokyo Suite" is a musical work that explores the unique communities of "Japantowns" founded by Japanese immigrants and their descendants in various parts of the world. These areas are an important cultural heritage and represent the connection of the Japanese diaspora with their homeland.

The first movement of the suite, "A Pacific Journey", describes the wave of emigration across the Pacific towards America. The music opens with lively and colourful motifs that capture the vibrant culture and dynamic atmosphere of the area. The melodies reflect the traditions and spirit of Japanese culture.

The second movement, "The Acapulco Samurai", is dedicated to the Japanese community in the city of Acapulco in Mexico. Here the music creates an atmosphere of melancholy and reflection, capturing the experiences of Japanese emigrants and their descendants in a new land.

The third and final movement of the suite, "Los Angeles Nisel", explores the Japanese community in Los Angeles. This movement captures the vibrant and pulsating culture of the Californian city and the Japanese colony living there. The music is lively and rhythmic, with a touch of Latin American influences that highlight the cultural fusion in this community.

Thierry Deleruyelle's "Little Tokyo Suite" is a fascinating musical work that powerfully expresses the stories and experiences of the "Japantowns". With each movement, the suite describes a unique region with a Japanese community and imaginative music that captures the culture, history and heritage of these communities. The composition is a tribute to the Japanese diaspora and a celebration of the cultural diversity created by the emigration and creation of these special communities. The "Little Tokyo Suite" promises to touch the audience with its vibrant and emotional sounds, offering them a musical journey through these fascinating "Japantowns".
