Additional info/contents Mercury Rising was commissioned by the "sinfonisches blasorchester wehdel" and its conductor Thomas Ratzek on the occasion of its 50th anniversary in 2018. The premiere took place on 2 November 2018 at the Stadttheater Bremerhaven. Mercury Rising was conceived as a virtuosic and lively opening piece and begins swingingly with driving, syncopated rhythms and a broad palette of sounds. The horns and saxophones play an extended melody, which is taken over by the trumpets after a key change. A quieter section follows in which muted horns - over the bubbling sixteenth notes of the low clarinets - play a distant-sounding fanfare. This passage is interrupted by an impassioned melody from the tenor instruments; shortly afterwards, however, it is played by the entire brass section, accompanied by echoes of the woodwind figurations from the beginning of the piece. All this finally leads to a triumphant conclusion.
