Programme notes *: additional text

With its 4,808 m, Mont-Blanc is called the "roof of Europe". For a long time, the highest mountains on earth were unconquerable. Only in the last 250 years have the giants of our planet been climbed. In 1786, for example, the crystal seeker Jacques Balmat and the doctor Michel-Gabriel Paccard made the first ascent of Mont Blanc. Several paths lead to the summit of Mont Blanc: however, the normal ascent is via the magnificent "voie royale" (the 'royal road') from Saint-Gervais-les-Bains, opened in August 1855 by the Englishmen Hudson, Kennedy and Smythe. In 1861, the route from Saint-Gervais via Aiguille du Goûter (3863 m), Dôme du Goûter (4304 m) and Arête des Bosses (4547 m), now considered the normal route, was first climbed.
