When
Radkersburg
was developed as a settlement, where it was located and who founded it cannot be clearly reconstructed. The time from which Radkersburg fell under sovereign rule is also unknown. The first documented mention is in 1182 as "Rakersburg" (in 1211 the older form "Rategoyspurch" is still attested, the original word is the Slavic personal name Radigoj), and it is mentioned as a market in the Ottokarian Urbar of 1265/67. Radkersburg was probably originally a personal property, i.e. it did not belong to the sovereign, but to a nobleman who received a gift directly from the king.
In 1978, Bad Radkersburg was the only town in Austria to be awarded the European Gold Medal for the preservation of monuments. The town is a member of the Association of Small Historic Towns. All the important architectural styles are represented in Bad Radkersburg, from Romanesque (the time of the town's foundation) to Art Nouveau and the present.
Bad Radkersburg is a health resort with an 80 °C hot thermal spring. This, together with the longest sunshine duration in Austria, makes the town an attractive tourist destination. With approx. 500,000 overnight stays per year, tourism is an important economic factor; in addition to several spa and rehabilitation facilities, there are also several spa and health hotels.
