Additional info/contents "Ray of Light" was composed on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the royal harmony "De Heidegalm Berkenbos". The miners' quarter in Berkenbos (Heusden-Zolder, B) still bears witness to the once flourishing industry of the province of Limburg - mining. For every miner, going down the shaft in the lift for the first time was a sensational experience. The noise of the closing doors, the jolt with which the pit cage started to move and then plummeted down into the depths at a speed of almost 30 km/h. The opening theme of Ray of Light was the "The Mine". The opening theme of Ray of Light reflects not only the courage but also the fear, doubt and uncertainty of the descending miners. In the solo section, the fear is clearly heard during the long stretch through the mine tunnels in the dark, with only head and pit lamps.
Working underground was never without danger. Highly flammable and occasionally explosive mine gas always posed an invisible threat. In addition, there was a constant danger of collapse. The beautiful chorale movements are therefore an ode to the miners who gave their lives in the mine. The oriental scale refers to the multicultural character of the miners' quarter, with its many retail shops and different types of houses, which are characteristic of the architecture of the miners' quarters. Being a miner is still a dangerous job, but at the end of the dark mine tunnel, the miners still see a ray of light as a sign of hope.
