Additional info/contents "Ray of Light" was composed on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the royal harmony "De Heidegalm Berkenbos". The miners' quarter in Berkenbos (Heusden-Zolder, B) still bears witness to the once flourishing industry of the province of Limburg - mining. For every miner, going down the shaft in the lift for the first time was a sensational experience. The noise of the closing doors, the jolt with which the pit cage started to move and then plummeted down into the depths at a speed of almost 30 km/h. The opening theme of Ray of Light was the "The Mine". The opening theme of Ray of Light reflects not only the courage but also the fear, doubt and uncertainty of the descending miners. In the solo section, the fear is clearly heard during the long stretch through the mine tunnels in the dark, with only head and pit lamps.
Working underground was never without danger. Highly flammable and occasionally explosive mine gas always posed an invisible threat. In addition, there was a constant danger of collapse. The beautiful chorale movements are therefore an ode to the miners who gave their lives in the mine. The oriental scale refers to the multicultural character of the miners' quarter, with its many retail shops and different types of houses, which are characteristic of the architecture of the miners' quarters. Being a miner is still a dangerous job, but at the end of the dark mine tunnel, the miners still see a ray of light as a sign of hope.

Programme notes *: additional text

Mining was once a thriving industry in the province of Limburg, making a significant contribution to the economic development of the region and the country. The history of mining in Limburg goes back a long way and spans several centuries, with the extraction of coal and other mineral resources playing a central role.

The mining history of Limburg is closely linked to the discovery and exploitation of coal deposits. Coal was mined in the region as early as the 12th century, mainly for local consumption. Over time, however, larger deposits were discovered, which led to increased mining and fuelled the economic development of the region.

In the 19th century, mining in Limburg experienced an enormous boom as the industrial revolution greatly increased the demand for coal as an important source of energy. New technologies and methods were introduced to make mining more efficient and profitable. The use of steam engines, conveyor systems and other innovations helped to increase the productivity of the mines.

The heyday of mining in Limburg reached its peak in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. At this time, numerous mines flourished in the region and mining was an important employer for thousands of people. Entire communities and towns grew up around the mines and were dependent on the mining industry.

However, the impact of mining on the region was not only economic. Mining also had a significant social and cultural impact on the communities in Limburg. The miners and their families formed close-knit communities characterised by hard work and mutual support. Mining was also an important part of local identity and traditions.

Despite its importance and contribution to economic development, mining was also associated with challenges and risks. Work in the mines was often dangerous and stressful, and many miners were exposed to high risks, including accidents and health problems caused by dust and toxins.

The decline of mining in Limburg began in the later 20th century as the demand for coal declined and alternative energy sources were developed. Many mines were closed and thousands of miners lost their jobs. This had a profound impact on the region, including economic decline and social change.

Today, mining in Limburg is largely history and most of the mines are closed or decommissioned. Nevertheless, mining has left a legacy that has had a lasting impact on the region's landscape and communities. Mining in Limburg continues to be seen as an important part of local history and culture, and its impact will be felt for a long time to come.
