Composer Oswald, Gerald
Difficulty level 3+
Evaluation level of countries A3 (Austrian C level); EJ
Additional info/contents This programmatic composition describes the history and events surrounding the former Roman city of Flavia Solva. It was located in the south-eastern province of Noricum, today's southern Styria in Austria. In this work, the composer depicts the grandeur of the city, the beauty of the landscape, the hustle and bustle of the marketplace, the dangers there and finally the destruction by the Germanic tribes in the 2nd century AD. Flavia Solva was rebuilt into a flourishing city, but in the 5th century its inexorable decline began a fate it shared with other cities of the Roman Empire. An impressive work about a fascinating place!

Flavia Solva was once a flourishing Roman city located in what is now Austria near Wagna, south of Graz. It was founded in the 1st century AD and quickly developed into an important trading centre and cultural hub in the region.

The city was surrounded by impressive walls and had a variety of buildings, including public baths, temples, a theatre and an amphitheatre. Flavia Solva became an important centre of Roman life, where residents could experience the Roman legal system, culture and luxury of the time. The city benefited from its strategic location on the Via Claudia Augusta, an important trade route that led from Italy to Pannonia. The city flourished through trade in goods such as wine, olive oil and ceramics. Workshops and manufactories sprang up, producing artfully designed products that were exported to the surrounding areas. In the course of time, Flavia Solva became an important centre of Roman culture. City life was characterised by theatre performances, gladiator fights in the amphitheatre and cultural festivals. The inhabitants enjoyed the entertainment and luxury that the city offered.

With the decline of the Roman Empire, Flavia Solva also began to decline. In the 5th century AD, the city became increasingly less important and was finally ravaged by barbarian attacks and the turmoil of the migration of peoples. The once magnificent city was abandoned and fell into oblivion.

It was not until the 19th century that Flavia Solva was rediscovered and a systematic archaeological investigation of the remains began. The excavations revealed the impressive remains of the former Roman city and gave insight into the life and culture of this bygone era. Today you can visit the ruins of Flavia Solva and immerse yourself in the history of the ancient Roman civilisation. The remains of the city provide information about everyday life, architecture and trade relations of the time. Flavia Solva has become an important historical and tourist destination, attracting visitors from all over the world.
