Additional info/contents The Semmering is a pass in eastern Austria on the border between Lower Austria and Styria and is also known as the Magic Mountain. It soon gained importance as one of the most important traffic routes from Vienna to the south. Between 1848 and 1854 a high mountain railway line was built. This programmatic piece of music tells the story of this railway line from the first idea to the time when the first train made its historic journey over the pass.
