Additional info/contents The Semmering is a pass in eastern Austria on the border between Lower Austria and Styria and is also known as the Magic Mountain. It soon gained importance as one of the most important traffic routes from Vienna to the south. Between 1848 and 1854 a high mountain railway line was built. This programmatic piece of music tells the story of this railway line from the first idea to the time when the first train made its historic journey over the pass.

The Semmering railway (German: Semmeringbahn) in Austria, which starts at Gloggnitz and leads over the Semmering to Mürzzuschlag, was the first mountain railway in Europe built with a standard gauge track. It is commonly referred to as the world's first true mountain railway, given the very difficult terrain and the considerable altitude difference that was mastered during its construction. It is still fully functional as a part of the Southern Railway which is operated by the Austrian Federal Railways.

In 1841, Carl von Ghega, who later became the building director, was commissioned to plan the Semmering crossing. In 1842, Carl von Ghega gathered experience in Great Britain and the United States and designed three variants, which he presented to Hermenegild Ritter von Francesconi, then General Director of the State Railways.

At that time, tunnels were considered to be manageable only with a low rock cover. When longer tunnels were built, vertical shafts were also sunk at intervals in order to be able to drive intermediate attacks from them. This method is still used today to speed up construction or because geological conditions require it. Tunnels were still driven by hand using mining techniques, as there was no better suited explosive such as dynamite apart from black powder. Tunnelling was risky: The Weinzettelwand tunnel had to be re-tracked after a rockfall on 27 October 1850, in which 14 miners died. Originally, the route was planned to lead through a short tunnel and in galleries along the Weinzettelwand, but then the line was moved into the mountain.

The construction work was completed in 1854. Already on 23 October 1853 the first locomotive ran over the Mürzzuschlag-Payerbach line. Shortly afterwards the railway line was passable throughout. On 16 May 1854, Emperor Franz Joseph and Knight von Ghega - he had been elevated to knighthood in 1851 - drove the line. On 17 July 1854 it was opened for passenger traffic. However, as it was only considered a part of the entire southern railway project, it was never ceremonially opened.
