Additional info/contents The musical setting of the Staatz legend "The Black Woman" describes the content of this myth through musical timbres and moods, which reports about the Swedish invasion of the Staatz Castle. At the beginning one already suspects the disaster of this ancient legend and is kidnapped by a kind of medieval dance and a chorale into the heyday of the Staatzer castle. However, during the 30-year war, more and more Swedish troops moved through the whole country. From time to time the Swedes even pile up before Staatz and prepare to storm the previously invincible castle. For days the knights of Staatz and the population expect the attack of the Swedes, as well as a young maiden, who simply can't believe what is ahead of her. But after a few days of rest the Swedes start bombing the castle with cannonballs and storming it with troops. The Swede penetrates deep into the castle, where he plunders, destroys and kills. Fear and horror fills large and small. After this terrible attack, only the spirit of the young maiden, who has been floating night after night around the battlements and towers of Staatz Castle ever since, can still be heard through the sound of the bells.

The 30 Years' War and the Swedish attack on the Staatz Castle: The Legend of the Black Woman

The Thirty Years' War was one of the most devastating conflicts in European history, raging from 1618 to 1648 and affecting large parts of Europe. Austria was not spared from the effects of this war either. A particularly fascinating episode in this context is the Swedes' attack on the Staatz Castle, which is linked to the legendary story of the Black Woman.

Austria was on the side of the Catholic League in the Thirty Years' War and was attacked several times by Protestant troops, including the Swedes led by King Gustav II Adolf. The Staatzer Castle, also known as Staatz or Staatz Castle, was a strategically important fortress in Lower Austria that became a theater of military conflict during this conflict.

In 1645, Swedish troops under General Torstensson attacked the Staatz Castle. This fortress, located high above the town of Staatz, offered a significant military advantage and was captured by the Swedes. The attack and capture of the castle was part of Swedish war tactics to weaken the Habsburgs and undermine their position of power in the region.

A fascinating legend is associated with this event - the legend of the Black Woman. After the Swedes conquered Staatz Castle, they are said to have encountered a mysterious woman dressed in black who appeared within the walls of the castle. The figure was described as dark and ghostly, and was said to prophesy doom for the Swedes. This apparition was viewed by the soldiers as a bad omen.

The Legend of the Black Woman is one of many historical sagas surrounding the Thirty Years' War, reflecting people's imaginations about the cruel reality of war and its impact on the population. Such stories served not only to explain events, but also to impart moral lessons and process the horror of war.

The Swedes' attack on the Staatz Castle during the 30 Years' War symbolizes the uncertainty and suffering of that time. The Legend of the Black Woman is a fascinating example of how historical events are interwoven with myth and legend, and how people tried to understand the unfathomable in times of war. Today, this legend remains as part of the rich Austrian historical and cultural landscape, reminding us of the challenges and spirit of bygone eras.
