Additional info/contents The mysterious Traun River, which rises from several sources in the Totes Gebirge in Styria (Austria), flows through the most beautiful lakes in all its beauty and splendor. Along the Höllengebirge, the Traun meanders through the Salzkammergut like a crystal ribbon. This piece is an exciting musical journey along the river, which tells of a rich history: from the first Celtic settlements to the construction of large power stations. It offers different and versatile passages for all instrument groups. Mystic River is therefore an ideal competition piece or is suitable as a main work for a demanding concert program.

Programme notes *: additional text

In Roman times, the Traun was used by flat barges from the Traun accident to the mouth of the Danube. Furthermore, the Traun was very important for transporting salt and wood. The salt ships were originally sold at their final port on the Danube as fuel and construction timber, which, in addition to the brewing industry, contributed to a further increase in wood consumption in the Salzkammergut region. In order to protect the forests from overexploitation, Emperor Maximilian ordered the empty salt deposits to be returned to their original locations in 1509. The Traun farmers withdrew their heavy horses from Zizlau (Salzhafen an der Donau near Linz) to Stadl. From here the Roithamer "Fallbauern" and from Ebensee to Hallstatt the Ebensee Rossbauern took care of the countermove to Gmunden. With the counter-raids, food (mainly Hofkorn) for the miners and salt works workers was also brought to the Salzkammergut. The boat trip on the Traun is presented in the Schiffleutmuseum in Stadl-Paura.
