Additional info/contents The town of Perg is located in the so-called Lower Mühlviertel in Upper Austria on the northern edge of the Machland and has a population of just under 9,000. Perg owes its name to the "Lords of Perge" and its economic importance from the 14th century onwards to the millstone breakers' and potters' guilds, among others. Thanks to its connection to the famous Danube cycle path, tourism gained economic importance in the 1990s. In 1969, Perg was elevated to city status. The district town sets national accents, particularly as a school and training center. The Perg town coat of arms is adorned with a silver unicorn standing upright on the middle and rear peaks. The meaning of the unicorn is not clear. A unicorn made of 1,200 galvanized horseshoes has been the landmark on the main square since 2016. The “Perger Polka” was commissioned by Krückl Bau from Kurt Gäble in 2017, dedicated to the Perg town band under the direction of Thomas Asanger and premiered on May 19, 2018 at the “Concert in the Park”. The Perg family business Krückl has been successfully active in the construction industry since 1954. In 2004, the company was awarded the Austrian national coat of arms. Composer Kurt Gäble is not only friends with his fellow composer Thomas Asanger in this area, but also has a great passion for cycling, which takes him back to the Machland region in Upper Austria time and again.
