Additional info/contents "The Saga of Störtebeker" describes the legendary story of the notorious North Sea pirate Klaus Störtebeker. The story takes place at the time of the Hanseatic League, in which trade and the first signs of capitalism and a global market economy made the bourgeoisie increasingly stronger and slowly but surely disempowered the nobility. Klaus Störtebeker and his “Likkedeler” (equal sharers) form the counterpart to this. As the “Robin Hood” of the seas, they hijack Hanseatic ships and distribute the trade goods (e.g. gold, bread, cloth and herrings) to those in need.

In a major sea battle, Störtebeker's cog, the "Bunte Kuh", is sunk by a large Hanseatic fleet and the privateers are arrested. During his execution on the Grasbrook near Hamburg, Störtebeker finally makes a crazy bet with the mayors of Hamburg. So everyone from his team who he can walk past after being beheaded should be released. And so, according to the legend, Klaus Störtebeker rises up without a head, to the horror of those watching, and walks past 12 of his men until he finally falls down.
