Evaluation level of countries C4 (Swiss 1st class); D4 (German upper level)
Duration 10:05
Additional info/contents “Dance Variants” op. 146 was a commission to celebrate the fortieth anniversary of the Honolulu Wind Symphony (Hawaii). James Barnes wrote a composition that combines an overall A-B-A structure in variation form. The work opens with a short fanfare before moving to the dance-like first theme of the work, the majority of which is in rather unusual 7/8. This first statement is then re-scored and developed in several variants before the music slows down to a calm, more romantic middle theme. The lively first “dance theme” then reappears in several more variants, leading to a short, fast coda.

"Dance Variants" is a term in music that refers to the use of variations on a particular dance theme or dance rhythm in a musical work. This form of variation can be found in various genres and styles of music and offers composers the opportunity to develop and change a theme or motif in creative and diverse ways.

The origins of Dance Variants often lie in the use of dance music as inspiration for compositional work. Composers have traditionally used dance forms and styles as the basis for their compositions, whether as stand-alone dance movements in a suite or as part of a larger musical work such as a symphony or concerto.

A classic example of the use of Dance Variants can be found in Baroque music, particularly the dance suites of the 17th and 18th centuries. In these suites, composers would introduce a theme or motif and then present a series of variations that address the theme in different rhythmic, harmonic, or melodic forms. These variations could arise from changes in tempo, key, rhythm or instrumentation, adding variety and depth to the work.

Another example of dance variations can be found in jazz music, where improvisation plays a central role. Jazz musicians often use well-known jazz standards or well-known melodies as a starting point for improvisational variations that develop the original theme in new directions. By using different harmonies, rhythms, phrasing techniques, and stylistic elements, jazz musicians can interpret and reshape a theme in countless ways.

Examples of Dance Variants can also be found in contemporary music, where composers use modern dance rhythms or styles as a starting point for their musical works. These can range from traditional dance forms such as waltz or tango to modern dance styles such as hip-hop, breakdance or house music. The variations here can be created through electronic sound processing, sampling techniques or other experimental approaches that change and transform the sound and structure of the original theme.

Overall, Dance Variants offer a fascinating opportunity for composers to explore and expand on a theme or motif by presenting it in different variations. These variations can express a wide range of emotions, moods and creative ideas, giving the musical work a unique and layered dimension.
