Composer Neuböck, Fritz
Difficulty level 4
Evaluation level of countries A3 (Austrian C level); D3 (German medium level)
Duration 8:20
Additional info/contents The "Lords of Aist" depicts the history of the Upper Austrian city of Aisterheim. In the city centre is a wonderful castle surrounded by water. The beginning of this composition describes the magnificent castle (bar 9). Court life is reproduced by a Morris dance (bar 19). During the Austrian peasants’ war the castle served as a border fortress in the Bayern province, in Bavaria (Bar 53). In this peasant war, catholicism was imposed on the Protestant farmers. Neuböck depicts this by using two Church songs: “Der Mond ist aufgegangen“ and “Grosser Gott, wir loben dich“ (Bar 91). A calm middle section (Bar 151) with a soaring flugelhorn solo depicts the city as a health resort. In bar 187, all of the themes finally come together in a dynamic climax in which Aisterheim is described as a young and dynamic city.

Aistersheim Castle, a picturesque jewel in Upper Austria, rises in the middle of the town of Aistersheim and invites visitors to take a journey through the centuries. The history of this castle is rich in cultural events, architectural splendor and changing owners.

The origins of Aistersheim Castle go back to the Middle Ages. The castle was first mentioned in documents in the 13th century and served as a fortified residential tower. Over the years, the castle went through various construction phases and was redesigned into a representative Renaissance building. The Starhemberg family, one of the most influential noble families in the region, acquired the castle in the 17th century and made a significant contribution to its architectural development.

During the 18th century, Aistersheim Castle experienced a heyday under the Althann family. Extensive renovations and expansions gave the castle its current baroque appearance. The magnificent gardens and the carefully landscaped castle park were created in this era and give the property a harmonious combination of architecture and nature.

In the 19th century, the castle changed hands several times before it was finally acquired by the municipality of Aistersheim. In the following decades the castle served various purposes, including as a school and administrative building. However, the municipality was committed to preserving and restoring the historical heritage, which led to a major renovation in the 1970s.

Today, Aistersheim Castle shines in all its splendor and hosts a variety of cultural events and exhibitions. The castle museum offers insights into the history of the region, the development of the castle and the way of life of past eras. The magnificent halls, artistic ceiling paintings and historical pieces of furniture bear witness to the former elegance and lifestyle of the noble families who lived in the castle.

Aistersheim Castle is not only an important historical monument, but also a lively place that combines history with contemporary culture. Concerts, theater performances and art exhibitions take place here every year, attracting visitors from near and far. The harmonious fusion of history, art and nature makes Aistersheim Castle an unforgettable experience for everyone who passes through its gates.
