Additional info/contents Italia, it’s a rhapsodic orchestral poem composed by Alfredo Casella (1883-1947) in 1909 and performed in the first time under his conducting at the Caveau Hall in Paris on 23 April, 1910.
Casella describes this rhapsody: “The composer wanted to evoke in this work two of the most characteristic aspects of southern Italy: the tragic one of Sicily, the volcanic island from the vast desert areas burned by a scorching sun, and superstitious and feverish life; the other, it’s about Naples and its bay, full of the most exuberant life force and the most carefree joy”. The composition is the free reworking of some popular themes.

Alfredo Casella (1883-1947) was an important Italian composer and conductor of the 20th century. One of his outstanding works is the rhapsodic orchestral poem "Italia", which was composed in 1909. The premiere of the piece took place under the direction of Casella himself on April 23, 1910 in the Caveau Hall in Paris.

The composition "Italia" reflects Casella's intention to represent two of the most characteristic aspects of southern Italy in musical form. The first part of the work paints the tragic picture of Sicily, the volcanic island with vast desert areas scorched by the scorching sun. This is a musical representation of the tragic and superstitious life experienced by the people on this island. Casella is able to capture the scorching heat, the desert landscape and the deep, emotional atmosphere of this region through his orchestral means.

In the second part of "Italia" Casella focuses on Naples and its bay. Here the musical presentation contrasts with the first part by capturing the exuberant vitality and carefree joy of this region. Here the lively sounds of the orchestra are used to convey the lively hustle and bustle and joyful atmosphere of Naples and its bay.

The use of rhapsodic elements in the composition may indicate that Casella chose a free and emotional form to musically capture the contrasts and nuances of the two regions. The premiere at the Caveau Hall in Paris marked a significant moment in Casella's career and contributed to the international recognition of his talent as a composer. Alfredo Casella's composition "Italia" remains an impressive example of a composer's ability to use musical means to capture the diversity and emotionality of a region while simultaneously expressing his own artistic voice.
