The composition "Energico (from 'Out of Earth')" by Oliver Waespi

Oliver Waespi, a contemporary Swiss composer, is known for his innovative and expressive works for symphonic wind orchestra. One of his notable compositions is "Energico" from the cycle "Out of Earth". The individual movements of this work are titled "...magna parens terra..." and "...inde genus durum sumus", which refers to the Latin language and the profound thematic references to nature and human existence.

The movements in detail
"...magna parens terra..." (Andante, ma sempre energico): The title means "Great Mother Earth" and refers to the earth as the origin of all life. This designation underlines the connection to nature and the reverence for the power and fertility of the earth. The movement begins with an andante tempo, but remains energetic throughout. This combination of a rather calm basic tempo and at the same time an energetic way of expressing it creates a dynamic tension. The music paints a picture of the earth as a living, powerful force. Through a rich and varied orchestration, the different facets of nature are portrayed. The melodies are grand and majestic, reflecting the greatness and grandeur of the earth.

"...inde genus durum sumus" (Ruvido - Subito meno mosso - Poco andante, poco rubato, colla parte - Piu energico): Translated, the title means "Therefore we are a hard race", which indicates the resilience and toughness of humanity. This designation could allude to the challenges and struggles of life. The movement begins with a ruvido (rough) character, which immediately creates an intense and almost aggressive atmosphere. This is followed by a sudden slowdown (subito meno mosso), which leaves room for reflection and melancholy. The transition to a poco andante, poco rubato, colla parte brings a free and flexible interpretation of the melody played together with the orchestra. The movement is marked by contrasts and changing emotions. The beginning is rough and stormy, which could represent the harshness and struggle for survival of humanity. The quieter passages offer an introspective pause before the movement finally moves into a piu energico, celebrating the indomitable energy and unwavering spirit of humanity.

The two movements of "Energico" from "Out of Earth" are closely thematically related. While "...magna parens terra..." celebrates the earth as its origin and life-giving force, "...inde genus durum sumus" focuses on humanity and its resilience. Together they paint a picture of the symbiotic relationship between the earth and its inhabitants.

Waespi uses a wide range of musical means to explore these themes. The combination of energetic and calm passages, the diverse orchestration and the contrasting moods create a complex and multi-layered work that reflects both the strength and vulnerability of nature and humanity.

"Energico" from "Out of Earth" by Oliver Waespi is a fascinating work that impresses with its thematic depth and musical diversity. The two movements offer a reflective and dynamic exploration of the relationship between the earth and humanity. Waespi succeeds in conveying the beauty, power and complexity of nature as well as the strength and endurance of humans through his composition. This work is a significant contribution to contemporary music for symphonic wind orchestra and a striking example of Waespi's compositional skills and artistic vision.
