Additional info/contents The work "Infinity" is based on the fairy tale "Der Wundervogel und die beiden Bettelknaben" by Franz Xaver von Schönwerth. The composition programmatically reproduces the fairy tale and captures the different moods and feelings of the respective situations. The deep flute solo certainly causes astonishment right at the beginning. The miracle bird is no normal blackbird and so the main melody of the composition winds its way majestically into higher registers. This main melody is then varied according to the course of the fairy tale and reaches its climax in the tutti. In the score there are some quotations from the fairy tale in the footer. They serve as orientation as to which part of the fairy tale is set to music in the composition. This is intended to make interpretation a little easier.

Information for the Conductor:
At the beginning of the work a balanced orchestral balance must be ensured. Despite the low register, the flute solo should sound very full and soloistic. In the Allegro section, care must be taken that the percussion instruments do not drown out the orchestra and do not sound too hard in touch. For the different eighth measures, the division is prescribed and must also be conducted. The use of the flute in measure 154 should only be given when the tam-tam of the previous measure has almost completely faded out. This creates the necessary calm before the last slow part (slow and dark in tone), which then, as the piece has begun, fades away again into infinity.

"Infinity" won the international Schönwerth Composition Competition of the North Bavarian Music Association on 22 October 2011 and was premiered by the "Bläserphilharmonie Regensburg" conducted by Jörg Seggelke.

The fairy tale "The Magic Bird and the Two Beggar Boys" by Franz Xaver von Schönwerth in connection with the composition "Infinity" by Mathias Wehr

Franz Xaver von Schönwerth was an important Bavarian folklorist and fairy tale collector of the 19th century who recorded the oral stories of his home region of Upper Palatinate. One of his most famous fairy tales is "The Magic Bird and the Two Beggar Boys". This story tells of hope, adventure and the pursuit of happiness. Mathias Wehr, a contemporary composer, was inspired by the atmospheric depth and emotional resonance of this fairy tale and created the composition "Infinity" for wind orchestra. This report examines the connection between Schönwerth's fairy tale and Wehr's musical interpretation.

The fairy tale is about two poor beggar boys who go out into the world to seek their fortune. They meet a magic bird who has magical powers and helps them on their journey. Through courage, solidarity and trust in the miracles of life, the boys overcome numerous challenges and experience fantastic adventures that ultimately lead to their prosperity and happiness.

The story is characterized by a fairytale atmosphere enriched by magical elements and unexpected twists. The miracle bird symbolizes hope and the possibility of achieving the impossible. The moral of the fairy tale emphasizes the importance of trust, courage and belief in the good, even in difficult times.

The composition "Infinity" by Mathias Wehr

Mathias Wehr was inspired by the profound and emotional atmosphere of the fairy tale "The Miracle Bird and the Two Beggar Boys". In "Infinity" he tries to capture the essence of the story and the universal themes of hope and adventure musically. The composition reflects the fairytale world by creating a soundscape that expresses both the magical and dramatic elements of the narrative.

"Infinity" is a continuous composition that uses various musical themes and motifs to depict the beggar boys' journey and their encounters with the Miracle Bird. The work begins with a quiet and thoughtful introduction that reflects the boys' poverty and hopelessness. With the appearance of the Miracle Bird, the music increases in dynamics and color, with lively melodies and harmonic changes highlighting the magical and adventurous aspects of the story.

Wehr uses a wide range of instruments to create the fairytale atmosphere. Woodwinds represent the lightness and magic of the Miracle Bird, while deep brass and powerful percussion cues symbolize the challenges and dangers of the journey. These contrasting timbres help to musically portray the emotional depth and tension of the story.

The central theme of hope is conveyed through soaring melodies and radiant harmonies that appear repeatedly throughout the composition. The climax of the piece, which represents the triumphant conclusion of the journey and the achievement of happiness, is marked by a powerful and majestic passage that celebrates the feeling of triumph and fulfillment.

"The Miracle Bird and the Two Beggar Boys" is a timeless fairy tale that inspires the imagination and moral values of readers. Through the composition "Infinity", this story is interpreted and brought to life in a new, musical way. Mathias Wehr has managed to capture the essence of the narrative and transform it into a musical work that touches and inspires listeners.

The connection between Franz Xaver von Schönwerth's fairy tale "The Miracle Bird and the Two Beggar Boys" and Mathias Wehr's composition "Infinity" shows how stories and music can inspire and enrich each other. While the fairy tale impresses with its narrative depth and moral message, Wehr succeeds in pouring these elements into a musical form that transports listeners into a world full of magic and hope. "Infinity" remains an important work in the wind orchestra repertoire and an impressive example of the power of musical narrative.
