In the picturesque lands of the Dutch province of Limburg, surrounded by rolling hills and lush greenery, stretched the majestic abbey of Thorn. An oasis of spirituality and peace, the abbey was inhabited by devout women dedicated to monastic life. Among them, one particular personality stood out - Josina Walburgis van Löwenstein-Wertheim-Rochefort.

Born into a family of nobility and influence, Josina grew up amid splendour and tradition. The daughter of Count Johann Dietrich von Löwenstein-Wertheim-Rochefort and Josina de la Marck, she was sent by her father to Thorn Abbey at a young age to fulfil a lofty calling. Here, between the thick monastery walls, her heart was filled with the melodies of faith and she began to spend her days in the service of God.

However, Thorn Abbey had a history marked by Josina's maternal aunts - Anne of the Marck and Josina II of the Marck - who had both ruled over the monastery as prince abbesses. And so it happened that in 1631, after the death of her father, Josina was elected prince abbess. Her appointment to this high office was to change the young woman's destiny forever.

But the powers of love and the heart are sometimes stronger than the duties of the world. During her time at the abbey, Josina had caught a glimpse of a man who set her heart on fire - Count Herman Frederik Hendrik van den Bergh. The passion between them kindled a secret fire that neither the walls of the abbey nor the strict conventions of the time could extinguish.

The following year, in 1632, a scandal of unimaginable proportions ensued. Josina and Herman Frederik dared to marry in secret, an alliance that made the walls of the monastery tremble. The news spread like wildfire, and the consequences were inevitable. Josina was stripped of her office and her father, filled with anger and shame, imprisoned her in a remote monastery.

But Josina's story was far from over. With determination and courage, she managed to escape from the walls of her imprisonment. Her love for Herman Frederik drove her on, and in 1636, after countless adventures and trials, she finally reached her beloved husband.

The saga of Josina Walburgis van Löwenstein-Wertheim-Rochefort and her forbidden love for Count Herman Frederik Hendrik van den Bergh was immortalised by the sounds of music in a composition by Otto M. Schwarz - "The Heart and the Crown (The Walborg Saga)". The music tells the moving story of Josina's inner conflict, her brave escape and her steadfast love. The composition reflects the drama, the romance and the undying bond that kept the two lovers together through all obstacles.

Thus, the story of Josina and Herman Frederik is remembered as a timeless example of the power of love and the strength of the human spirit - a story preserved for eternity by the harmonious sounds of "The Heart and the Crown (The Walborg Saga)".
