Programme notes *: The exploration of the West by Lewis and Clark is one of the most famous expeditions in the history of the United States. The expedition was commissioned by President Thomas Jefferson and took place between 1804 and 1806. Its aim was to explore the newly acquired territory of the Louisiana Purchase and to find a waterway to the Pacific. The expedition was led by Meriwether Lewis and William Clark and comprised a group of around 50 men who became known as the "Corps of Discovery". Lewis and Clark's journey took them from St. Louis, Missouri, across the Missouri River, through the Great Plains and the Rocky Mountains, to the Pacific Ocean on the west coast of North America. The expedition presented many challenges and dangers, including dangerous rivers, inaccessible terrain and encounters with indigenous peoples. Despite these difficulties, the expedition succeeded in discovering a variety of new plants, animals and geographical features and gathered valuable information about the western territory of the United States. Lewis and Clark's exploration of the West was musically realised by Robert Sheldon in his composition "Intrepid Journey". The piece is a tribute to the explorers and their pioneering journey. It captures the spirit of adventure and discovery while conveying the challenges and dangers the expedition faced. "Intrepid Journey" consists of three parts, each reflecting different aspects of the expedition. The composition is a powerful and inspiring work that transforms the adventures and discoveries of Lewis and Clark into music. It is a musical memorial to the men who explored the western United States and to the intrepid spirit that drove them.
