Homage" in music is an artistic expression of recognition and appreciation of other artists, works or traditions. It is a form of homage in which a musician consciously takes up elements, styles or motifs from other artists and integrates them into his own composition. Homage can take many forms and ranges from subtle allusions to overt quotations.

The tradition of homage in music goes back a long way and can be found in various epochs and styles. Even in Baroque music, for example, composers honoured their predecessors by using certain musical motifs or structures. One famous example is Johann Sebastian Bach's "Musical Offering", which was dedicated to the Prussian King Frederick II and was based on a theme provided by him.

A common form of homage is the direct quotation, in which the composer takes passages from another work. This can be a tribute to a revered composer or a reference to a particular musical style. For example, the Russian composer Igor Stravinsky used themes from Giovanni Battista Pergolesi in his work "Pulcinella" to pay homage to the Italian Baroque master.
