A playful, varied introduction leads to the majestic main theme, recalling the heyday of the British Empire. It is played initially by the woodwinds, and then repeated in full orchestration. The opening section returns but quickly the music takes a different turn and finally the main theme returns in full glory. A short lively finale closes this worthy composition. These aspects of the United Kingdom have been used as inspiration by many composers, and one of them is Rene Ruijters, who created a powerful composition for wind band entitled "Britannica". “Britannica” is more than just a musical representation of Britain; it is a sonic declaration of love to the country and its people.
