Gene Milford's rhapsody for wind orchestra "Old West Trilogy" is a stirring musical work that interweaves three well-known American folk songs. These songs date back to the American West and are closely linked to the history and culture of this region.

Milford begins his rhapsody with an atmospheric introduction that evokes the vast and rugged landscape of the American West. This introduction leads seamlessly into the first song, “The Colorado Trail”. Milford treats this song with respect for the original while giving it a fresh and modern sound.

The second song, “Goodbye Old Paint,” is introduced with a gentle and melancholic melody. This song is about the hard and lonely work of cowboys and Milford manages to convey these emotions through his sensitive orchestration and dynamics.

The climax of the rhapsody comes with the third and final song, “The Old Chisolm Trail.” Milford increases the energy and pace of the piece to capture the exciting and adventurous spirit of the Old West. The song builds to a powerful and triumphant finale, bringing the rhapsody to a rousing and satisfying conclusion.

The piece is both a tribute to the musical tradition of the American West and a creative and inspiring reimagining of that tradition.
