Additional info/contents This suite consists of various works written at the time of, or precisely for, the "Sergeant Trumpeter" of the King of England in the late 17th and early 18th centuries. Trumpet tunes and sonatas were a popular form of entertainment in concert halls, theatres and inns during this period. Some pieces remained in use for more than half a century and are now popular for festive or ecclesiastical occasions.

The material for this suite is often available in different versions. For example, there are editions in which E is played sounding in 7th measure. The original version of this arrangement is in the British Library.

Probably the most famous movements are the Trumpet Tune (here combined with the Slow Air) composed by Jeremiah Clarke (ca. 1673-1707) and The Prince of Denmark's March (often wrongly called Henry Purcell's Trumpet Voluntary).

Trumpet Tune, Cibell and Rondo are from the semi-opera The Island Princess, a collaboration of Jeremiah Clarke and Daniel Purcell. The II. and V. movements are from the anthology Suite de Clerk.

To aid interpretation, it is advisable to listen to recordings of historical performance practice, such as interpretations by Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Frans Brüggen or Christopher Hogwood.

Quelle: Alle Werke sind in der British Library (BL) London zu finden.

I. Trumpet Tune and Air (B-Dur)
II. The Gigue (F-Dur)
III. Cibell (B-Dur)
IV. Rondo (Es-Moll)
V. The Prince of Denmark’s March (B-Dur)
