Additional info/contents	In this symphonic poem, Reuber sets to music a ghost story of his homeland: many, many years ago, an old servant maid lived on the property of a rich farmer. Unsuspectingly, the farmer had placed his will in the hands of the hypocritical maid. She falsified the letter of inheritance in such a way that after the death of the farmer the whole property fell to her. But God's punishment soon overtook her: After a few weeks she died. But her guilt-ridden soul could not find peace in her grave. At midnight, when the bell struck twelve, she left her dark tomb. Then she sat down at a nearby water and eagerly tried to wash away the guilt from the yellowed will; therefore she was given the name "Washerwoman". Once upon a time it happened that a priest was called to a seriously ill person at night and had to pass the "washerwoman" with the Blessed Sacrament around the witching hour. At the longing calls of the tormented spirit the clergyman gave her the blessing with the Blessed Sacrament, and the redeemed soul disappeared into night and fog. Since then the old "washing woman" has not been seen again. Only the fear of walking alone along those waters at late night has remained.
