Composer Scharnagl, Martin
Difficulty level 2+
Duration 3:30
Additional info/contents “Mountain Wind“ is a fine small concert piece by Martin Scharnagl. This delightful composition has beautiful melodies set in a sentimental atmosphere. With ease, Martin Scharnagl portrays deep emotions. The introduction of “Mountain Wind“ presents the main theme, which is then enhanced by beautiful counter melodies and simple variations. The lyrical flute solo (cantabile) is a very sonorous part of the composition, followed by a glorious festivo. In conclusion, an invigorated mountain wind resounds within the harmonically enhanced maestoso.

Mountain wind refers to a meteorological term describing the wind that blows through the valleys and over the tops of mountains. This effect occurs due to the different temperatures and pressures in mountainous regions.

During the day, the slopes and peaks of mountains warm up faster than the surrounding valleys and plains. The warm air rises and creates an updraft called a valley breeze. At the same time, the air in the valleys is cooler and denser. This creates a pressure difference between the valleys and the peaks, which causes a flow of air from the valley to the mountains. This wind is called a mountain wind.

At night, this effect is reversed. The mountain slopes cool faster than the surrounding valleys, causing cold, dense air to flow down and blow down the mountain. This nighttime downdraft is called a valley wind.

Mountain winds can vary depending on geographical and topographical conditions. In some cases, they can be strong and reach high speeds, which can have an impact on the climate and vegetation in mountain regions. They can also be important for outdoor activities such as mountaineering, paragliding or gliding, as they affect the wind conditions in these areas.
