The first rays of sunlight shine on the vast area of the Scottish Highlands. The early sun slowly makes the morning mist disappear and exposes the wet rocks underneath, which glisten like diamonds in their light. On a hill next to a clear mountain lake stands a mighty building. High towers and thick walls secure the gigantic fortress, in which hustle and bustle prevails.

The Highlands are demarcated from the lower lying Central Lowlands by a clearly visible line from the air (the Highland Boundary Fault) which runs southwest-northeast from Ardmore on the Firth of Clyde through southern Loch Lomond (Inchmurrin/Balmaha) and on to Stonehaven on the North Sea. The Highlands are divided into the Northwest Highlands and the Grampian Mountains by the Great Glen tectonic rift (gleann is the Gaelic word for valley). Along the Great Glen are several lochs, including Loch Ness. The highest mountain in the British Isles, Ben Nevis (1345 m), is in the Grampian Mountains.

The Highlands were less exposed to English influence than the Lowlands. The Scottish Gaelic term A' Ghàidhealtachd means "Gaelicness" in the sense of a region of Gaelic culture and language, although today a large part is English-speaking. As a result, they have retained more of their own cultural character. In particular, the clan structure in the Highlands is still partly alive or has been revived. Today, this is also preserved for tourism. Their clans and whisky production have made the Highlands world famous.
