With the composition "Ein Reisetagebuch" (A travel diary) Manfred Sternberger tries to present different impressions and experiences, which one collects on a journey, in a musical way.
In the calmly held introduction (Adagio) the participants and the listener get in the mood for the forthcoming company.
The journey begins with a pleasant pace (Allegro - bar 16). Maybe you are sitting in a train and the beautiful landscape passes the window in quiet pictures. In between, one sees castles and palaces and remembers a time when one did not travel so calmly and relaxed.
In the following Adagio (measure 86), there is a small break for the travellers. The collected impressions will be processed and the experience can pass in peace once more in review. This is expressed even more clearly in the first part through a close motivic connection to the skin theme.
The journey continues (Allegro - bar 117) and the main theme of the first part sounds as a recapitulation.
The journey ends with an impressive closing sequence (Adagio - bar 139).
The close connection of the individual motifs and themes results in a very dense, closed picture of the individual travel stations.
From the basic form this composition corresponds to the three part song form A - B - A.
